Who We Are

Samarthyam is a disabled people organization (DPO) founded in 1993. We have a Special Consultative Status with United Nations ECOSOC since 2015. The pioneering efforts of Samarthyam are recognized by UN agencies and Government of India, for example promoting rights based advocacy, inclusive, accessible and sustainable environment with focus on independent, safe mobility and gender equality (girls and women with disabilities).

Samarthyam disseminate and implement ‘Accessibility Awareness and Implementation Strategies’ through a novel model, which primarily focuses on promoting enabling environment. We undertake action oriented approach to mainstream persons with disabilities and to live quality life with dignity.

Samarthyam is regularly nominated by UN agencies and local governments as a subject expert to advice on program and policies relating to disability inclusive Agenda 2030. Samarthyam team has authored several guidelines and codes, which are widely used as national accessibility standards and resource manuals to make Incredible India: Accessible India.

Under its Project National Centre for Accessible Environments, it evaluates, develops, and promotes universal accessibility in built and outdoor environments, transportation systems, information communication technology and products using the guiding principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Sustainable Development Goals: “Leave No One Behind”.

Goal: promote the understanding and implementation of accessibility of the sustainable built, social and virtual environments

Under its Project Women with Disabilities Forum for Action, Samarthyam promote, ensure and uphold rights of girls and women with disabilities.

Goal: Towards building a more just and peaceful world, where everyone lives with dignity, respect, and equality.
