Samarthyam is an organization of persons with disabilities founded in 1993. We have a Special Consultative Status with United Nations ECOSOC since 2015. The pioneering efforts of Samarthyam are recognized by UN agencies and Government of India, for example promoting inclusive, accessible and sustainable environment with focus on independent and safe mobility.
We have co- the Harmonised Guidelines 2016 and National Building Code 2016 to ensure accessibility standards in built environment.
Samarthyam’s Access Audit Team comprises accessibility auditors with disabilities have graduated from United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP). We are pioneers in conducting access audits, having 28 years of experience. We are Member, NITI Aayog, GoI on Disability & Accessibility and Empanelled Accessibility Auditors, Accessible India Campaign of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, GoI. We specialize in implementing strategies for the retrofitting of the built environment and provide hand holding support to implementing agencies with cost effective standards. We have access audited more than 11750 sites/ buildings since 1994. We are cross-disability focused and in access audits, -disability, -age and -gender friendly elements are emphasized. We have access audited 80 CPWD buildings pan India including- PMO, Rastrapati Bhawan, North Block, South Block, Nirman Bhawan, Vigyan Bhawan, Supreme Court, Jawahar Bhawan, Udyog Bhawan, etc. We have expertise in conducting accessibility audits of buildings, transport systems, open spaces, gardens, parks, stadiums, roads & pedestrian spaces, etc. This means our focus is 100 per cent on universal accessibility and user-friendly environment.
